Men Only

Shadow Mountain Academy is committed to providing the highest level of education, care, and recovery skills for adolescent males ages 17-24. While addiction is common among males and females, our experience in treating adolescents demonstrates that the potential for success is maximized when the treatment group is restricted to one gender.

Gender differences run much deeper than the behaviors we acquired by watching our parents. Extensive scientific research has clearly demonstrated that the many variations between the learning styles of males and females are hardwired – the brains of males and females actually operate differently.

At Shadow Mountain, our program has been designed specifically for the unique learning styles of young men new in recovery.

It has long been known that recovery is a two-fold process: it is individual in that the person in recovery must acknowledge and address their own addiction and the consequences of their behavior. However, recovery cannot happen in isolation. The recovering alcoholic or addict must have the support, encouragement and nurture of a sober community in order to sustain recovery throughout life. During the early stages of recovery, the greatest benefit is obtained when that community of support is comprised of individuals with whom the newly recovering addict or alcoholic shares a high degree of commonality.

Our community of young men new in recovery finds that the similarities among them far outweigh the differences. This attitude of sameness facilitates the establishment of a community’s level of trust, the intensity of its interaction, and the insistency on open and honest engagement: put simply, a community’s depth. When that community is free of the understandable distractions of mixed genders, those qualities are achieved far more readily.

This is not to suggest that Shadow Mountain is monochromatic. In fact, a number of women are on the Staff at Shadow Mountain. The fact that most of those women are in recovery themselves (and in fact one is a graduate of Shadow Mountain) adds considerably to the richness of the community’s life without diminishing the intensity of the student group’s interaction.
