It’s normal as a parent with a child who is away at an adolescent drug treatment center to wonder whether or not they tell their friends. Sometimes it’s hard not to because their child isn’t in school and their friends kids know that. Coming up with an excuse for where their child is can create all sorts of rumors: they’re pregnant, they’re in rehab, they have an eating disorder, something happened to the child and the list goes on. If you are worried your child will be labeled the bad kid then it’s okay to keep your mouth shut about it.

Sometimes it’s when the kid opens up about what’s going on with them in regard to their addiction. The parents see the progress they are making and the help that they are getting and they a lot of times get an apology from the child for putting them through such a tough time. Other times the kids open up about some really painful stuff that the parents might not know about like they are bullied at school or they feel pressure to be perfect.
