That’s a tough question. Most drug abuse rehab programs will tell you no. If your child never had a problem with alcohol but abused drugs there is a chance he or she isn’t and will never be an alcoholic. However, if addictive personalities you don’t want to test where the line is when it comes to addiction. Sometimes a child can be lost and use drugs and go through rehab and then years down the line when they are in their thirties have a drink and it not lead to alcoholism. There definitely signs when it comes to a recovering alcoholic or drug user who has been living sober but has started to use again. For starters, don’t be surprised if you miss them but also don’t look the other way or second guess yourself if you have seen them. Withdrawing is one sign. If the recovering addict is suddenly spending a lot of time in their room, hiding away. If you’ve noticed alcohol has gone missing or has been replaced with water, if you smell alcohol on their breath or if they come home appearing to be drunk or high. If someone else has told you that they think they are using again.

What If I Disagree With Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

If you have been told recently by a rehab that your son or daughter needs dual diagnosis treatment it may be one more thing you really don’t want to hear at the moment. You might feel like you are being punished for being a bad parent and you might feel layered with guilt because you have a child with so many problems.

Here’s the thing: a dual diagnosis is not a life sentence. It’s not the end of the world and if you feel like it is take a step back and do some research on the subject and ask yourself is this the second or third time kid has gone to rehab?
