Shadow Mountain Activities

At Shadow Mountain, the value of the "teachable moment" is never wasted. Our personal experience has shown us that young adults are most willing to embrace recovery when they feel safe enough to drop their defenses. Nowhere is this more prevalent than when they are engaged in an activity they feel passionate about. This new perspective inevitably opens our young men to the concept of self as a work in progress. The extensive activity programming which Shadow Mountain offers consists of arts, athletics, and outdoor recreation. With recovery being the primary goal, our aim is for these young men to experience these activities in recovery, not separate of it. We show them how to enjoy life without drugs, alcohol, and destructive behaviors by replacing these old habits with new or renewed passions for healthy activities and hobbies. Then, we seize teachable moments when they are receptive and help them to embrace therapeutic concepts of recovery and emotional growth. Every day we show our students how they can be joyous in recovery and self-exploration by filling their time with structured and scheduled activities that they look forward to and can count on.

While many of these activities are not mandatory, we do expect each individual to attend and participate in several sessions of all activities to see if an interest or passion can be generated. We take this appraoch as it is not uncommon for an individual struggling with addiction to avoid trying new things for fear of failure and/or fear of what other people may think.
